This clip pre-dated the birth of Dix Trips but fits the brief perfectly. I was in the Pyrenees watching Stage 16 of the 2007 Tour de France that would finish on the slopes of the nearby Col d’Aubisque. After the peloton had passed and the road was clear I strapped my cheap Canon Elura to the bars of my bike (GoPros hadn’t been invented yet), said a few words into the camera, and set off down the slopes of the Col de Marie Blanque. The quality of the footage is low res and standard-def but nonetheless I hope you’ll enjoy the ride as much as I did. Note: make a point to hang around for the short commentary at the end.
Travel Tip The best place to watch the Tour de France (or any bike race) is in the mountains or on a hill, and make sure they’ll be pedalling up the hill: this means they’ll be going slower and you’ll get a better look at the riders. Take some food and drink and make a day of it. If you can, go by bike, and then you can avoid the traffic jams when it’s all over. And the best part? It’s free!
