Unlike Singapore – where chewing gum is about as welcome as hard-drugs – Catalina Island, off the California coast, was virtually founded on it. The island was owned and developed by William Wrigley in the 20’s as a holiday resort and much of the architecture and vibe of the island still reflects that idyllic pre-war period which is where much of its charm lies.
Travel Tip Catch the Catalina Express from Long Beach or San Pedro and you’ll be on the island in just over an hour. Try and avoid the weekend if you can – especially in the summer – when Avalon can become unpleasantly busy. If you get to the Island mid-morning and leave in the late afternoon you’ll have given yourself a great day out.
